17 May – World Hypertension Day

1 min. read

High blood pressure or hypertension is the most common cardiovascular disease and a modern world epidemic.

Blood pressure is said to be elevated when it exceeds 140/90 mm Hg. Despite the fact that it normally does not cause problems, it has to be treated because it can damage blood vessels (arteries) and vital organs; for this reason it is known as the silent killer, and needs to be treated in order to be stopped.

Almost 30% of the global population has high blood pressure, yet half of them are not aware of their condition, and only a quarter receive adequate treatment. This means that 75% of the global population suffering from hypertension are at a risk from heart and kidney diseases, stroke and even sudden death.

On World Hypertension Day, which annually falls on 17 May, the World Hypertension League attempts to raise public awareness and promote prevention and control of this disease.
