Energy

Krka’s development includes making investments into solutions that make efficient use of energy and sustainable exploitation of renewable resources, underpinning our environmental responsibility and care for quality of life..

We invest in more than just achieving sound business results; we also invest in the efficient use of energy, as well as energy efficient investing and maintenance.

Krka’s main sources of energy are:

  • Natural gas,
  • Liquid petrol gas,
  • Electric power and
  • Fuel oil as back-up fuel.

Power supply is derived from the public utility electricity grid, Krka’s in-house generators powered by renewable sources such as the solar power station, and from the natural gas cogeneration plant.

Since 2021, our current electricity supplier has been delivering clean carbon-free electricity to Krka, so our activities in Slovenia do not cause any indirect CO2 emissions; we cut Krka’s CO2 emissions by 45,000 tonnes per year. This could be compared to planting 170,000 trees.

By systematically implementing measures and investing in energy efficiency improvements in recent years, we have achieved average electricity and natural gas savings of more than 500 GWh per year. We produce 14% of the overall electric power we use by our alternative power sources.

RECOVERY OF WASTE HEAT

Heat is generated as a by-product of various production and energy systems. We maximise it by using it to heat water.

Preparation of heating water requires 54% (or 24 GWh) less natural gas thanks to:

  • heat from a compressed air station, smoke gasses of steam boilers and various vapours of the steam boiler system,
  • condensed heat of cooling aggregates,
  • cogeneration of electric and heat power.
